ALT-FUTURES

This work is based on the Monika Bielskyte Design Principles “Protopia Futures”. Not Utopia, Not Diystopia. A hopeful and optimistic approach to more sustainable and inclusive futures.

“Protopia is a process of proactive, collective prototyping of a more livable future, and instead of seeking
a destination to “arrive” it embraces
the joy of continuous learning and
contextual adaptation. ” Monika Bielskyte

During violent and disturbing times, we have the right and collective purpose to imagine and take agency of our future as humans. However, if we are all the time surviving, our brains are stuck in short-term vision and unable to imagine alternatives. As we spend all our time thinking about paying off debts, having a roof over our heads (which eats most of our income) and watch in real time the world worst atrocities, the space to co-create a better narrative for our future seems to slip through our fingers.

“A clear vision of the future won`t come easy when your system is busy trying to survive the present.”

The neuroscience of clarity, ASTC.

“Clarity is not cognitive. It is neurophysiological. And a nervous system under pressure can only see what is urgent not what is possible. In other words: A nervous system in survival mode cannot access possibility. When threat is present, the brain does exactly what it should: postpone the future.”

This is Baby Machine. A naturalist and optimistic reinterpretation of Birth Machine from H.R. Giger. This work is the first of an ongoing visual and musical project where I imagine more ecological, collaborative, regenerative and trans-feminist futures.
